Week 9 - Parametric study on Gate valve.

Aim: To perfrom a Parametric study on Gate valve.

Procedure:

The gate valve is the fluid valve that opens by lifting the barrier gate from the path of the fluid flowing thriugh a pipeline. Gate valves require generally very less space and are and can be fitted along the pipe axis and they hardly restict any fluid flow when they are fully opened.

Step 1:Open spaceclaim and import the gate valve geometry.

Step 2: Extract the fluid volume and extend the inlet and outlet for 80mm.Create the cross sectional plane for the rise of the gate disc. Create a parameter.

Step 3:Create a mesh size for 10mm and generate mesh.

Step 4: Create name for inlet and outlet.

Step 5: Setup the below conditions:

Solver Type: Pressure Based Solver

Gravity: -9.81 (in negative z direction)

Solver: Steady State

Model: k-epsilon model (realisable with scalable wall function)

Material: Water

Cell Zone: Fluid(water)

Run for 250 iterations

Step 6:create a contour of the pressure.

Results: create the simulaition for 10mm lift and increase the lift height till 70mm.

If the values are not increasing in the ascending order try changing the values of the lift size, since the mesh may create errors in certain zones.

The flow coefficient can be defined as :

Cv=Q (√Sg/ΔP)

k= flow coefficient in Kv or Cv

Q= flow rate

Sg = specific gravity (1 for water)

ΔP= Total Pressure Drop

Simply Kv=Cv*0.86

Conclusion: With the help of the parameters the solving time and effort can be reduced drastically. The negative mass flow is due to the mass exiting the outlet.As the lift increases mass flow rate increases.
