Challenge

Week 9 - Challenge 3 - Bumper

AIM:

To create the closed volume solid body of a Bumper with the help of joining the class A, B and C surfaces and to make the component compatible for the manufacturing by providing feasible draft angle to it.

Tooling Axis:

  • Tooling axis is the direction in which a core or cavity of mold opens. This Axis is very important to determine the orientation of the component in mold, core and cavity design.
  • If the tooling axis is wrong than it may cause difficulty for the component to eject from the mold
  • Also wrong tooling direction may causes some defects in the component like flow lines, improper filling of material etc.

As shown in the above image. The Tooling axis has been created by Point-direction method.

Draft Analysis:

  • Draft analysis of the surface is carried to check if the surface or part can be manufactured with the required draft angle.
  • Draft angle is needed for the component to clear the core and cavity surface as it would have shrunk towards the center while cooling.
  • The draft angle can be given upto 3 degree as per design standard rules in order to make the component reliable and easy to manufacture.
