Week 9 - Attachment Feature Creation (Ribs & Screw Boss) - Challenge 1

AIM:

To Create the rib for the Drill Handle considering the design rules mentioned in the video.

To Create the Screw boss for the Drill Handle considering the design rules mentioned in the video.

General Guidelines for Bosses:

  • Draft - 0.5 degrees on the walls of boss
  • Thickness - Typically 40%* of the nominal wall at the base.
  • Height to Diameter Ratio - 3:1
  • Radii - 0.25mm maximum radii.

OBJECTIVE:

  • Sketches
    • Use Positioned sketch
    • Sketches should be Iso-Constrained
  • Tree Structure
    • Ensure Proper Tree Structure
    • Geometrical sets should have a proper name based on the sketches present inside of it
    • All the sketches should be created under the Geometrical set
  • Report
    • A detailed report should be done explaining the draft analysis and the tooling axis creation.
    • An explanation should be given on the way of creating the tooling axis, particularly the Bisecting method.
  • Reference
    • Refer to the below-given image to understand the position of the Screw Boss and Ribs

SOFTWARE USED : CATIA

Let us look at how we have designed

INPUT:

CAD DATA is downloaded and Opened with CATIA.

TOOLING AXIS:

Tooling axis is defined as such all the features of the part can be manufactured easily. so here we followed the below steps to create the tooling axis.

  • Extract the side base and Create a point in the middle of the surface.
  • Create a axis on the point

  • Intersection is taken with the axis system and Class A.
  • Sketch is drawn with taking the intersection curve and draw a line with bisecting.
  • Another line is drawn normal
  • Both the lines are taken for bisecting and getting the Tooling Axis
  • Hence we get the Tooling Axis

DRAFT ANALYSIS:

  • Draft is done on the Class A surface.
  • Change it to material in customise view.
  • Click the Draft analysis tool and click the surface and align the compass to tooling axis.
  • So here is photo of not cleared (Green) draft.
  • Refering with a group session. The mentor said that it is Class A problem.
  • So kindly consider.

B SURFACE:

  • B surface is created by using the given Class A surface.
  • Apart complicated face join other faces.
  • Offset it to 2.5mm beneath the Class A.
  • Create boundry and Create MSS for the rest of the sections.
  • Join the faces.
  • Hence we have created the B surface.

C SURFACE:

  • The outer edge of the Class A surface is taken as reference boundry.
  • Sweep is made with reference to surface for 90 desgree
  • Sweep is made with reference to tooling axis with draft.
  • Join the sections and create the C Surface

FINAL TRIM:

  • Join A and C surface
  • Trim with the B surface

  • Closed Body is created

RIB :

  • Ribs are created on the face as shown the picture.
  • Faces are extraced and sketch is done
  • Sketch is drawn as line on the extracted face
  • Extrude is done for 12.5mm that is 5*t as per the rule
  • and this is given up to next element.
  • part body is used and thickness is given for 1mm
  • we then add to the closed body
  • Fillets are given 0.25mm

Root thickness is calculated and it passed the rules

SCREW BOSS:

  • Sketch is drawn with the extract of rib
  • The outer dia as 8.2mm and inner as 5.2mm so the thickness of the one end will be 1.5mm which is the rules of creating screw boss
  • Pad the sketch above the rib because some part will sit on the screw boss at the time rib height should not interfere.
  • Fillets are given

DRAFT ANALYSIS:

  • Draft is done on the Class A surface.
  • Change it to material in customise view.
  • Click the Draft analysis tool and click the surface and align the compass to tooling axis.
  • So here is photo of not cleared (Green) draft.
  • Refering with a group session. The mentor said that it is Class A problem.
  • So kindly consider.
