Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge

Aim of the project:

To perform the Transient analysis simulation of Worm gear assembly and capture Total deformation, Equivalent stress, and elastic strain.

Cut the gear by half in Space claim, so as to bring the model within the limit even in finer mesh.

Set Up

  1. In the Ansys workbench we chose Transient analysis and in engineering data we kept the material structural steel as it is.
  2. After Importing the Universal Joint mechanism model in the Geometry, We opened it in SpceClaim.
  3. Now in the SpaceClaim, we added plane as necessary and split the body and cut the gear in to half as shown below. We moved all planes to suppressed for physics after usage.
  4. Later We opened Mechanical module by clicking Edit to the model tab.
  5. Renamed the models accordingly and kept material Structural steel as it is.
  6. Now under connections we edited all the contacts as Frictionless worm to gear contact as shown below.

  1. Added Body to ground joints to the Gear and also to the Worm as shown below.
  2. Now under Mesh, we generated Finer mesh, with element size 1mm.

9.Under analysis Settings we set the step controls to 15 number of steps and put Auto time stepping on, time step defined, kept weak springs as program controlled, Large deflection on and all output controls as yes except Contact miscellaneous.

10. Added revolute Joint Load with the rotation type and magnitudes defined through tabular data.

11. Now we requested desired solutions and got the results as shown below.

Equivalent Elastic Strain

Maximum: 8.6013e-003 mm/mm

Total deformation

Maximum: 7.2752 mm

Von-mises Stress

Maximum : 1571. MPa
