Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
WORM GEAR
Objective:
To perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly by cutting the gear by half so as to bring the model within limits. To rotate the worm so as to get to almost end of the half cut.
Aim is to get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation.
Geometry:
To minimise the computing time and get the model meshed within student version limit.

Mesh:

no of nodes:9038
no of elements:4347
Connection Details:

The connection between Gear and Worm is chosen to be frictionless contact.
A body to ground revolute joint contact is provided for the gear and the worm with axis of rotation as z axis as shown below;

Boundary Conditions:

rotation is provided to the worm of angle of 4000 degree with an increment of 80 degree for 50 steps.
Analysis Settings:
the simulation is performed using 50 steps with initialtime step of 0.2 sec , minimum time step of 0.2 sec and maximum time step of 0.5 sec with large deflictions on and weak spings as proram controled.
Results:
Equivalent stress:

Equivalent elastic strain:

Total deformation:

Conclusion:
| Analysis | Case 1 |
| Max Equivalent stress | 380.19 MPa |
| Max Equivalent elastic strain | 0.0022061 |
| Max Total deformation | 35.689 mm |
- Results shows the development of high Equivalent stresses in the worm gear.
- Total deformation of about 35.689mm is seen in the following simulation
- When worm gear is rotated to about 4000 degree angle about its axis of rotation. strain of 0.0022061mm/mm strain is developed in response to loading condition.
