Objective:
To perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy.
To find out the total deformation and equivalent stress for each case.
Introduction:
This project is about performing transient structural analysis on a double universal joint. Double Universal Joints can be created from two single joints by pinning or butting the hubs together, or specially designing the double joints with a single center section, to eliminate additional machining and assembling.
Procedure for setup
Open ANSYS>>Drag and drop transient structural model in the project schematic window.
Go to the engineering data to choose the materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy.
Go to the model tab
Rename the different as required
Go to Geometry tab to assign masterial
Go to connection >> contacts
Remove all the cantacts
Add all the joints of the assembly

Go to tab for the meshing:
For the meshing choose the values as follows:

The following analysis settings are defined for the simulation.

Set the joint load as follows:

Go to solution tab and insert Total Deformation and Equivalent Stress
Results
Case 1: Using Structural steel
Total Deformation

Equivalent Stress

Case 2: Using Stainless steel
Total Deformation

Equivalent Stress

Case 3: Using Titanium alloy
Total Deformation

Equivalent Stress

Summary table
|
Case using |
Total Deformation (mm) |
Equivalent Stress (MPa) |
|
Structural steel |
38.637 |
1676.1 |
|
Stainless steel |
38.637 |
1621.4 |
|
Titanium alloy |

Conclusion
Through this simulation, we notice that the total deformation remain the same regardless the three materials used but stress is high in the case of stainless steel and low when using titanium alloy.
