Week 8 - Universal Joint

Objective: To perform transient structural analysis on a universal joint with 3 diffeerent materials and finding out Equivalent stress and total deformation.

Setting up the analysis: The geometry is imported and opened in ANSYS mechanical. A fixed joint is added to the spring side which is body to ground and twp revolute body to ground jooints and added on either joints.

Add body to body revolute joints at the pin joints where the mobile is universal joint and reference is pin joints, add 8 joints like this at 8 connections

Mesh: A 4mm mesh is used for the entire setup with medium smoothing

Analysis settings: 5 time steps are taken

Boundary conditions: Rotation with values from tabular data is given to the joint at the geared side.

Solution:

Case 1: When Structural steel is used

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Case 2: Stainless steel

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Case 3: Titanium alloy

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Results:

Material Total deformation (mm) Equivalent stress(Mpa)
Structural steel 38.6 1464
Stainless steel 38.6 1419
Titanium alloy 38.6 722

Conclusion:

We can observe from above tabular data that Titanium alloy has least amount of stress compared to other materials
