Week 8 - Universal Joint
OBJECTIVE:-
To Perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using 3 different material.
Case 1 : Structural steel material
Case 2 : Stainless steel
Case 3 : Titanium alloy
Also we need to obtain the Total deformation & Equivalent stress for all the 3 case materials.
PROCEDURE FOLLOWED:-
Create a new transient structural model and initially assign the materials required for all the 3 different cases. We have to run the simulation using all the 3 different materials, one by one and tabulate the results. The 3 different materials to be added are Structural steel for case 1 , Stainless steel for case 2 & Titanium alloy for case 3.
Import the geometry and check for any errors by opening in space-claim.

No contacts will be needed in this simulation so deleting all the contacts,
Inserting joints as per the requirement of the model. Usually Fixed, Revolute & Translational joints have to be added.
Joint, Body to ground, fixed,

Joint, revolute, body to ground

Check for proper axis of rotation
Joint, revolute, body to ground

Confirm the rotational axis,
For all the spider arms joints has to be assigned thus proceeding with the same. A total of 8 revolute joints has to be added for the legs of the spider.

After the joints, analysis settings has to be done
Number of steps = 5
Weak springs = program controlled
Large deflection = ON
Output controls = all yes except contact miscellaneous
Auto time stepping = OFF
Time step = 0.1

Insert joint load,
Select the driving yoke rotation and assign the degrees of rotation as 30,60,90,120,150. Check whether the rotational direction is as per the requirement.
|
Steps |
Degree of rotation |
|

2. |
-60. |
|
3. |
-90. |

Post the Joint load we will be assigning the output results. In our simulation model we will be requiring the Total deformation and Von-mises stress, thus inserting the same.
Solving the model for all the 3 different cases.
Case 1- Structural steel
Total deformation:

Equivalent elastic stress:

Case 2- Stainless steel
Total deformation:

Equivalent elastic stress:

Case 3- Titanium alloy
Total deformation:

Equivalent elastic stress:

CONCLUSION:-
The Simulation is run for the model and the results are tabulated below:
|
|
Total Deformation |
Von-Mises stress |
|
Structural steel |
38.637 |
1490.1 |
|
Stainless steel |
38.637 |
1443.5 |
|
Titanium alloy |
38.637 |
734.2 |
From the above table it can be seen that the Total deformation remains the same for all the 3 cases, Whereas the Equivalent stress is Maximum for Structural steel, Which gradually decreases for the Stainless steel and is Minimum for the Titanium alloy material.
