Week 8 - Universal Joint
Universal Joint
Objective:
Perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy and to calculate Equivalent stress and total deformation for all the three cases.

- Analysis System: Transient Structural
- Material Properties:
Case_1 – Structural Steel

Case_2 – Stainless Steel

Case_3 – Titanium Alloy

- Mesh:
Physics Preference: Mechanical
Solver Preference: Mechanical APDL
Element Size: 3 mm

- Joints
- Body-Ground Fixed Joint is defined on Spring

- Body-Ground Revolute Joint on Universal Joint Spring End.

- Body-Ground Revolute Joint on Universal Joint Gear End

- Body-Body revolute joint between Universal Joint Spring End and Spider_2

In Similar manner other Body to Body Revolute Joints are defined between Spiders and Universal Parts. Refer below list of all joints in Universal Joint assembly.

- Analysis Setting
No of Steps: 5
Large Deformation: ON
Weak Spring: Program Controlled
- Joint Load
- Joint Rotation Load is given in 5 steps as 30,60,90,120,150 on Univeral Joint Gear End.

- From the above table, it is clear that equivalent stress is less in Case_3 where material is titanium alloy.
- As higher the young modulus, the more stress is needed to create the same amount of strain and structural steel has maximum young modulus as compare to other two material. And therefore, Structural Steel has maximum equivalent stress.
- Total deformation is constant for all three cases.
