Week 2 Railwheel and Track

Comparison of the Total Deformation, Equivalent stress and the life of Rail Wheel Track under Bearing load condition of 100KN and 500KN.

Analysis Setup

  1. Analysis System – Static Structural
  2. Mesh Type – Tetrahedral
  • Global Mesh Size – 50 mm
  • Mesh sizing of 35 mm on contact face of wheel and Track
  1. Joint
  • Translational Joint to Shaft
  • Planar Joint to Wheel
  • Fixed Joint to Track
  1. Contact
  • Frictional Contact between Track and Wheel with Coefficient of Friction of 0.3.
  • Frictionless Contact between Wheel and Shaft.
  1. Analysis Setting
  • Number of Steps – 5
  • Solver Type – Direct
  • Large Deflection is On.
  1. Load Condition
  • Bearing Load On wheel
  • Joint Displacement Shaft of total 500mm.

Conclusion:

  1. In first load case of 100KN, we observed that factor of safety is greater than 1 as well as minimum fatigue life is 1e6 cycles and that in second load case of 500KN,minimum fatigue life is drastically reduced to 5662.6 cycles and factor of safety is also below 1.
  2. Total deformation in both load cases is nearly same

Comparison of User Defined Result for Total Deformation & for Default Total Deformation for a load of 100000 N.

Their is no difference between user defined result plot and default plot of total deformation for a constant load of 100000N.

User Defined Result for Total Deformation

999.36 mm

Default Total Deformation

999.36 mm

User Defined Result Expression for Total Deformation : sqrt(UX^2+UY^2+UZ^2)

Where,

UX,UY and UZ are Directional Displacement in X,Y and Z direction respectively.

And Expression represent Total deformation is square root of sum of square of directional displacement in x,y and z direction.
