Challenge

Week 8 - Universal Joint

AIM:

To simulate the Universal Joint for their total deformation and stress using ansys workbench.

OBJECTIVES:

For this challenge, you will have to perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy(They can all be found in the General Materials section) The three materials must be used on the joint with the springs alone. Use a refined mesh if possible for the academic license. You need to obtain the Equivalent stress and total deformation for all the three cases and compare them. Submit a report regarding the same.

Case-1: Structural Steel

Case-2: Stainless Steel

Case-3: Titanium alloy

PROCEDURES:

  • Drop the Transient structural from the analysis settings.
  • Allocate the required material from the engineering data.
  • Then import the geometry, then open the model.

Materials:

Structural steel

Stainless steel

Titaium Alloy

Geometry:

  • First change the default name to GEAR_SHAFT, SPRING_SHAFT, CONNECTING_ELEMENT, JOPINT_1 & JOINT_2.
  • Assign the selected material for geometry parts.

Connections

  • Now connection, delete all default contact.
  • Then insert the body to ground fixed joint for spring end.
  • Insert the body to ground revolute joint for Gear_shaft.
  • Again insert the body to body revolute joint for spring_shaft.
  • Now insert the body to body revolute joint for each and every individual universel joint_1.
  • Again insert the body to body revolute joint for each and every individual universel joint_2.

Mesh:

  • Now open the mesh, size is 4mm.
  • In details, use adaptive sizing is NO. Generate mesh.

Boundary conditions:

  • Now transient structural, insert the joint load.
  • Joint in revolute - Ground to Gear_Shaft and type is rotation and magnetuide is tabular data.

Soluitions:

  • After giving proper boundary conditions, create desired solutions for output results, create solutions for total deformation and stress . slove evaluate for solutions.

RESULTS

case-1:Structutal steel

case-2: Stainless steel

case-3: Titanium Alloy

Conclusion

To simulate the Universal Joint running successfully, in this case simulate three diffrent materials. From the analysit Titanium alloy produce good structural abilities. When rotational load acting on spring structural steel and stainlees dteel produce very high stress. Titanium alloy is best suited for application as the material producing stress with in yield limit under load.
