Week 8 Challenge- Concepts of Structural Engineering

Objective:- Concepts of Structural Engineering

Solution Procedure:-

1) Check whether the truss given below is stable or not. Explain with a reason

The above structure is a stable structure as it is a rigid structure according to the equation

m =2j - r

as the LHS is equal to RHS

2) How is the degree of indeterminacy is calculated in

a) Beams and Frames

Degree of indeterminacy = number of reactions + number of Independent Processes - number of static equilibrium

b) Truss

The degree of internal indeterminacy for a plane truss is m - (2j - 3)

3) Calculate the degree of indeterminacy in the frame shown below

Degree of indeterminacy = number of reactions + number of Independent Processes - number of static equilibrium

= I + I1 = (3+6-3) + (3+0-3) = 6 degree

4) Give examples for

a) Simple Truss - For these trusses, the number of members (M) and the number of joints (J) are related by the equation M = 2 J – 3. - HOWE'S TRUSS
b) Compound Truss - sides of the bridges
c) Complex Truss - a type of truss where you can't identify it either as simple or compound

5) Solve for Bending Moment and shear force for the following load conditions

SHEAR FORCE:-

At c= 15KN

At b 30KN

At A is 45KN

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________-

Va+Vb = 19KN-------(1)

`sumMd = 0`

(Va*8) + (-10*6) +(-9*3.5) = 0

8Va - 60 - 31.5 =0

8Va = 91.5

Va = 11.44KN

Vb = 7.56KN
