Challenge

Week 8-Challenge

Aim and Objective:

To create 3D meshing for the given components and following the quality criteria

3D Meshing:

Elements sizes: Min- 2mm, Target- 5mm, Max- 7mm

Tet collapse: 0.15

For Model-2&4, element size-6mm

Steps to be followed:

  • Import the model into the Hypermesh and cleanup the geometry for a better mesh

Usually there are three methods to perform tetrameshing, we use each method depending on the complexity and if there are failed elements which cannot satisfy the quality parameters(i.e.tet collapse), we switch between these three methods

Three Methods are as follows:

  1. Conversion of 2D trias elements into tetrahedral elements by using Tetramesh panel
  2. Using the Quick Tetramesh from the utility panel
  3. Using the Volume tetramesh panel

Follow this link to understand the different methods of tetrameshing

First Method:

Conversion of 2D trias elements into tetrahedral elements by using Tetramesh panel

  • Delete the solid from the model, go to delete-solids-delete entity
  • Go to preferences- criteria file settings, fill the settings with the necessary parameters
  • Go to 2D-select surfaces-mesh type as trias-mesh
  • Go to quality index, perform the operations on the failed elements to qualify the quality
  • Go to 3D, tetra mesh, select elements under Fixed trias/quads to tetra mesh and mesh
  • Mask some group of elements to check the mesh generation

Second Method:

Using the Quick Tetramesh from the utility panel

  • Delete the solid from the model
  • Go to View-Browsers-Hypermesh-Utility, select Geom/Mesh from th panel click Quick Tetramesh
  • In the quick tetra tab, select the components and surface, give the inputs such as mesh size, mesh type-trias only, click on mesh to generate tetramesh
  • A pop up dialogue box will appear after surface mesh, click ok button, a new component collector will be created which consists of tetrahedral elements

Third Method:

Using the Volume tetramesh panel

  • Keep the solid of the model, go to 3D-tetramesh-volume tetra-tick checkboxes such as use curvature, use proximity, cleanup elements, fill minimum size and element size- mesh

Go to tool-check elements-3D-tet collapse-if there are any failed elements, refer the link below to correct these elements

Conclusion:

In this challenge I have learnt how to perform a 3D tetrameshing by using different methods and also how to remesh the elements for tet-collapse quality parameter.

Therefore the cad model images and .hm files are attached with this challenge
