Week 8 - Challenge 3 - Switch Bezel Design

Design and Draft Analysis of Switch Bezel

Aim:

To Create the tooling axis for the given class-A surface by Bisecting method to meet the requirement of draft angle and also create a Switch Bezel component through the given Class-A Surface and perform the draft analysis on the created model to check if the model has provided with the draft to every area of the model.

Objective:

  • To ensure the proper tree structure is followed.
  • Geometric sets should have a proper name based on the sketches present inside of them.
  • All the sketches should be created under the Geometrical set.
  • Use the publication option and publish the Tooling axis and Class A, B, and C surface.

Procedure for Switch Bezel Design:

First, we need to check the given Class-A surface is checked for connectivity with the help of the boundary option. Ensure that there is no gap between any surfaces.

Tooling Axis Creation:

  • The Base surface of the class-A surface is extracted and a point is created at its center and the axis system is inserted on the point and the Dummy tooling axis is drawn along the Z-Direction.
  • Then, using project 3D element, intersect along YZ direction with class A surface, then the two lines are drawn on the inclined edges.
  • With the help of Bisecting line, we can bisect the two inclined drawn lines and then we get the line along the YZ direction.

  • Using project 3D element, intersect along the XZ direction with class A surface, then enable the Cut Part by Sketch option, and intersected element will be visible to draw a line on it and make another line from the origin with an angle of 5 degrees. The 5-degree line is drawn because it doesn’t have another side to make intersect and draw a line.

  • Bisect that two Sketch lines and we get the Main tooling axis. It can be altered for modification of draft analysis by changing the degree value of the line.

B- Surface Creation:

  • Extract the Bezel rest surface and un-trim it and give the offset value of 3mm.
  • Extract the walls surface and the base surface and then un-trim and extrapolate it and offset the value of 3mm.

  • Trim the wall surfaces and the base surface to get the required one.
  • Finally, trim with bezel rest surface to get B-Surface and apply the fillets on the edges.

C – Surface Creation:

  • For the creation of Class C surface, we need to extract the edges of the Class A surface using Multiple Extract. Then for avoiding the patches on a curve, the Smooth curve option is used.
  • Now using the Sweep option, the Surface C is created with feature control mentioned below:

Go to Surface toolbar < Sweep < Profile type < line < Sub Type < With draft direction < Guide curve 1 – (select the extracted boundary) < Draft direction – (select tooling axis) < angle as 3 degree and 5 mm as length. Click ok.

For the draft direction, select the downward positive direction.

Join the class C surface with class A surface and trim with Class B Surface.

Make the surface body to solid body by switching to the part workbench and using a close surface option to make the solid body.

Procedure for Draft Analysis:

Before performing analysis, make the customized view into the Material Mode.

Then go to insert < Analysis < Feature draft analysis. Now the draft analysis tool will appear on the screen and give the information about color-coding, Display, and Direction.

We have to align the compass with the tooling axis to define the new current draft direction on tooling, once the compass is set on the tooling axis we have to lock it by enabling the option and clicking on anywhere on the surface and draft direction does not change. The class A and C surface turn into the Green Color, it states that it will be given a 3-degree draft with respect to tooling direction and it can be tool able.

Tree Diagram:

Conclusion:

The tooling axis is created and class A, B, and C surfaces are designed and the draft analysis was performed on the created model.
