Challenge

Week 8 - Challenge 2 - Base Bracket Design

Aim-To create a Base Bracket Plastic Component through a given Class A Surface and perform Draft Analysis on the final plastic component

Objectives:

  • Creation of tooling Ax

• Creation of Class B and Class C surface

  • Creating a solid part out of surface modelling

• Draft Analysis of Class A surface and final plastic component

Tool Used: CATIA VS

Introduction:In this project we are designing a base bracket using given class A surface. The approach includes creations of Class 8 surface

keping 3mm thickness in mind for the complete component. The designs also included Class C creation from the given parent surface

Constraint

•NO CHANGES IN CLASS A ARE ALLOWED

  • PART THICKNESS CANT DEVIATE BY MORE THAN 30%
  • ALL DESIGN RULES SHOULD BE STRICTLY FOLLOWED
  • ALL SURFACES SHOULD BE CLOSED BEFORE CONVERTING TO SOLID
  • ALL FACES SHOULD MEET THE ALLOWED DRAFT REQUIREMENTS

CLASS A: Following surface is given as the input for the component creation.

To continue with the design process first we need to find out the tooling axis for the surface and check for all the drafts using Draft Analysis tool of CATIA.For determining the tooling axis we intersect the yz plane to class-A surface.after that we get that profile.

we use bisection method to obtain tooling Axis.

This is our tooling axis.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:

1. Go to inserts>analysis>feature draft analysis.

2. Align the tooling axis with the compass.

3. Click on the surface and see that the surface is within the permissible limit of the draft values.

4. The surface should be green and in the column proper value (3deg) should be inserted.

Creation of Class B

  • Now for Class B creation, we have extracted surface from Class A and untrimmed them to obtain the original parent surface.
  • These surfaces are then offset to the required thickness.
  • After offsetting all the surfaces are trimmed into the required shape
  • Required fillets are given to the surfaces.

Now we got class-B surface

Class C Surface

Class C surface is use to join class-A & class-B surface.

The boundary of the class A surface is selected and a Surface sweep is done along the tooling axis to get a C surface

join all the class c surfaces with the class A surface and trim the resultant surface with the Class B surface to get the below output.

The surface is then converted to a solid body by closed surface command.

This is our final output.

Draft Analysis on our final product
