Morphing of a sheet metal component

AIM:

To morph the given component using various ANSA morphing techniques

THEORY:

ANSA encompasses a full-fledged Morphing menu which is completely integrated with ANSA’s interface and doesn’t require any additional module installations or licenses. The functions of the Morphing menu can be used to efficiently re-shape both FE and/or Geometry based model

Domain (Box) Morphing

Domain or Box Morphing is performed via boxes that are created around a particular part or assembly that the user intends to morph. The movement of the Morphing boxes control points defines the morphing operations on the entities inside the Morph box. This type of Morphing can be applied to both FE and Geometry based models.

Direct Morphing

ANSA’s Direct morphing features gives the user the ability to efficiently modify a part locally without having to create Morphing boxes. This method is extremely useful in creating local modifications on single parts. Creation of depressions, surface fitting certain FE part features to new target geometry, moving selected features along the contour of a surface and also the ability to freeze (rigid) elements during the morphing process are some of the direct morphing abilities.

Parametric Morphing

The desired morphing actions can be saved as parameters which can be accessed in batch mode. Users can enforce desired shape changes by changing numerical input value for the appropriate parameter. This method of morphing is highly utilized for coupling of the morphing operations to an external optimizer. The scripting capability can be used in conjunction with ANSA’s parametric morphing functionality to deliver faster DOE models.

Geometry Morphing

ANSA brings to the CAE world it's one – of – a kind’ tool for CAD geometry morphing. This pioneering concept allows the user to utilize the inventory of all the familiar FE morphing functions to perform equivalent operations in a CAD environment on geometric entities.

Morphing is a design change terminology without any numerical inputs. The biggest advantage of morphing is it can work both on FE & CAD.The best examples of morphing in the real time industry is the Honda Brio and Honda Amaze. Both are looking alike till the b-pillar post which there is a change. Amaze is sedan version of Brio.Another example is the Hyundai i10 and Accent. Some images of morphed auto mobiles are shown below

PROCEDURE:

Import the given model in ANSA using the File->Open or the shortcut Ctrl+O

Apply the topo option(Topo->Faces->Topo) to stich the component properly and avoid the free edges. We then use the orient option orient all faces in a plane

Here we will try to increase the length of these protruded geometries. We create a morphing box using Morph->Boxes->New. This morphing box has control grids that can be moved along

[Morph Box generated with the control Grids]

[Before Morphing] [After Morphing]

Next we select our next area of interest and create a morph box selecting the ortho box type and the geometry. The changes can be visualized below

[Before Morphing] [After Morphing]

All the morph boxed can be deleted using the Morph->Boxes Delete option.

Similarly now we put a box select over the whole body and select the nodes as control grids and bring a design chage. The final model is ready

[Before Morphing] [After Morphing]

RESULTS:

The given model is morphed using various ANSA techniques
