Week 7-Long Piston With Cam

Objective:

Perform a transient analysis on a piston and cam mechanism model that has been provided to you. You need to run the analysis with Frictionless contact, Frictional with 0.1 and 0.2 as the frictional contact for a total of 3 cases. Find out the Equivalent Stress, Directional Deformation and Equivalent Elastic Strain and compare them for all the three cases.

Solution:

-Firstly, open ANSYS workbench and drop down the Transient structural to run the analysis.

-Now, check the material which is selected defaulty by ANSYS.

-Now, import geometry in spaceclaim and check for any abnormalities.

-If there are any then fix them and open the geometry in mechanical module.

-Now, change the names of the geometry and make barrel and cams to be of rigid behaviour.

-Now, make connections where there are required.

-Now, we need to provide joints to the geoemtry.

-Fixed Joint

-Revolute Joint

-Translational Joint

-Now, we can mesh the geometry where the contact faces will have 3mm mesh and rest of the regions will have default mesh.

-Now, we have to assign boundary conditions.

-Now, we need to give the output parameters which are needed to run the analysis.

Comparision Table:

Frictionless Frictional coefficient(0.1) Frictional coefficient(0.2)

Equivalent Elastic Strain(mm/mm) 0.009049 0.0094121 0.063036

Equivalent Stress(MPa) 1799.1 1870.4 12512

Deformation(mm) 11.084 11.122 16.159

Conclusion:

From the above table we can see that as the coefficient of friction increases the values of Equivalent elastic strain, Equivalent stress and Deformation increases.
