Challenge

Week 7-Long Piston With Cam

Aim of the project:

To perform the Transient analysis of Piston and CAM mechanism and capture directional deformation , Equivalent stress and elastic strain.

Analyze and compare the results obtained in the varied condition like Frictionless contact, Frictional with 0.1 and 0.2 as Co-efficient of friction.

Set Up

  1. In the Ansys workbench we chose Transient analysis and in engineering data we kept the material structural steel as it is.
  2. After Importing the Piston and cam mechanism model in the Geometry, We opened Mechanical module by clicking Edit to the model tab.
  3. Renamed the models accordingly and changed stiffness behavior as rigid for Barrel and Cam for both the items.
  4. Now under connections we selected all the necessary contact and target surfaces as Frictionless contacts as shown below.

  1. Later we added 3 different Joints Fixed – Ground to barrel, Revolute – Ground to barrel cam and Translational Barrel to cam follower.

6.We did the meshing with the face sizing element size of 3mm as shown below.

7. Under analysis Settings we set the step controls to 9 number of steps and revolute joint in incremental angles as shown below.

9.Finally we requested desired solutions and got the results as shown below.

Equivalent Stress,

Maximum : 1332.1 MPa

Directional Deformation

Maximum: - 10.898 mm

Equivalent Elastic Strain

Maximum: - 6.7133e-003 mm/mm

Similarly we ran the simulation in 2 more varied conditions of Frictional Contact.

Conclusion

Condition

Directional Deformation (Max.)

Max. Von-mises Stress (Mpa)

Max. Equivalent Strain

mm/mm

Frictionless Contacts

10.898 mm

1332.1 MPa

6.7133e-003 mm/mm

Frictional with 0.1 co -eff

11.013 mm

1568.4 MPa

7.9559e-003 mm/mm

Frictional with 0.2 co -eff

11.05 mm

1914.6 MPa

9.6745e-003 mm/mm

We observed that there is more directional deformation and stress when there is frictional contacts. As the co-efficient of friction keep increasing the failure chances getting increased as we can see stress, strain and deformation values also getting increased along with Co-efficient of Friction.
