Week 7-Long Piston With Cam
Objective: To perfrom transient structural analysis and calculate stress, strain and directional deformation for different frictional settings for long piston and cam
Setting up analysis: The geometry is imported and opened in ANSYS mechanical. The parts are renamed into follower, barrel cam and barrel accordingly and the stiffness behaviour of barrel cam and barrel is changed to rigid.
Two contacts pairs are present

Type of contact is changed accroding to different cases and other settings are default settings
A ground to body fixed support is for barrel

A reveloute ground to body is selected for barrel cam

A body to body translational joint is added to barrel to cam follower

Mesh: Face sizing option is selected mesh size of 3mm is given

Boundary conditions:
Rotation is given to the revolute joint in 9 time steps. Based on this rotation, the translational joint will be moved

Analysis settings
For the 1st time step

For time steps 2 to 9

Solution
case 1: For frictionless contact
Directional deformation

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Case 2: For coefficient friction 0.1
Directional deformation

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Case 3: For coefficient friction 0.2
Directional deformation

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Result:
Results obtained are tabulated below
| Type of contact | Directional deformation(x)mm | Equivalent stress Mpa | Equivalent strain |
| Frictionless | 10.9 | 1367.9 | 0.0069 |
| Frictional with 0.1 coefficient of friction | 10.9 | 1417 | 0.0071 |
| Frictional with 0.2 coefficient of friction | 10.9 | 1545 | 0.0077 |
Conclusion:
From the above values we can observe that the stress and strain values increase with increase in frictional value and depend of the type of contact whereas deformation has no link with the type of contact used.
