Week 7-Long Piston With Cam
Objective: To perform a transient analysis on a piston and cam mechanism model that has been provided. Need to run analysis for 3 cases:
Case 1: Frictionless contact
Case 2: Frictional with 0.1
Case 2: Frictional with 0.2
Find out the Equivalent Stress, Directional Deformation and Equivalent Elastic Strain and compare them for all the three cases.
Case Setup:
1. select transient structural from the analysis system.
2. Import geometry

3. Here we are interested in stress plot of follower alone. so we set the stiffness behaviour of barral and barrel cam to rigid.
4. Set the contact as below . For case 1 set as frictionless and for case 2 & 3 set as frictional with 0.1 & 0.2 respectively.

5. create joints as follows.
a) fixed type for barel

b) revolutr type for cam.

c) translational type to follower

6. Applying proper sizing mesh the parts.

7. set the analysis setting as shown below.

For Steps 2-9 as follows

8. Create joint load for revolute joint as follows.

9. Solve
Result :
Case 1:
Equivalent stress:

Directional deformation

Elastic strain

Case 2:
Equivalent stress

Directional deformation

Elastic strain

Case 3:
Equivalent stress

Directional deformation

Elastic strain

| CASE 1 | Case 2 | Case 3 | ||||
| Max | Min | Max | Min | Max | Min | |
| Equivalent stress (MPa) | 1360.2 | 8.8819e-002 | 1899.9 | 0.089 | 20887 | 0.043 |
| Directional deformation (mm) | 10.865 | -9.35e-010 | 11 | -9.35e-010 | 17.921 | -9.35e-010 |
| Elastic strain (mm/mm) | 0.00692 | 7.04e-6 | 0.00962 | 7.05e-6 | 0.10578 | 2.3677 e-6 |
It can be infered that higher values observed in case 3 is because of higher friction
