Week 2 Bevel Gear Challenge

OBJECTIVE :

1)Write a few words on what a grid dependency test is and its use.

2)Perform a grid dependency test for the Bevel gear simulation for mesh sizes of 6,5 and 4 mm

3) Solve for Von-Mises stress, Equivalent elastic strain and Total Deformation using the previously mentioned mesh sizes.

4) Present your findings in an organized manner.

THEORY :

Grid Dependency test :

It is the study to investigate the dependency of result on grid. In grid dependency test , mesh is refined until the result become indendent of the mesh size. As mesh become finer and finer the accuracy increase at the expense of increase in computational time and cost. so doing mesh dependency test help us to arrive a mesh size compramising size and cost.

CASE SETUP :

For all 3 cases step to 1 to 6 is the same but global mesh size alone changes.

1.

Fig: bevel gear

Update the model in the spaceclaim.

2. Assign structural steel material for both gear.

Fig: Material Property

3. Set Contact

Fig: Contacts

4. Create revolute joint for 2 gear .

Fig: Revolute joint

5. Apply joint load as shown in image

Fig: Joint load

6. Set Analysis setting as shown below.

Fig: Analysis setting

7. Perform meshing using global mesh size 6, 5, 4

Surface of teeth is meshed with 1.75 mm.

8. After performing mesh, solve the model and evaluate the result.

RESULT :

Total Displacement

Von-Mises Stress

Elastic Strain

CONCLUSION :

From Grid dependency test result following can be concluded.

1. In all 3 cases total deformation is independent of the mesh size.

2. But when comparing the stress and strain plot it can be seen that refininng the mesh improve the result , hence the result is dependent on the mesh and mesh independence is not achieved.
