Week 3 Verification of Weld Joints
OBJECTIVE :
Simulate three different types of welding using three different weld materials
Weld Material used:
Case 1. Stainless Steel: In this case, the material of the plates must also be the same. Use Stainless steel for both weldments and plates. No need to add flux to the weldments.
Case 2. Aluminium Alloy:The material to be chosen for this case is Aluminium alloy(high strength, wrought). [Plate material to be used is stainless steel]
Case 3.Bronze: In order to simulate "Brazing", you should be using bronze as the weld material. Assign Stainless Steel to both plates and Copper to the "Ribs".
Run the simulation for a load of 15000N that is to be applied at the rectangular hole in the small plate( Same as in the video).
For each case, find out the Directional Deformation and equivalent strain experienced by the setup. Identify the weld joint that experiences the highest equivalent stress in each case and compare the results for all three cases
CASE SETUP :
In all the 3 cases the setting remains the the except the material assigned.
Material assigned as mentioned in the objective.
1. Import the geometry, Assign the material.

2. Keep all contact between plates as frictional contact with friction coefficient 0.2. All weld contact keep as bonded.

3. Mesh setting : Select the 2 plates and insert mesh sizing of 7 mm and generate mesh.

4. Analysis setting : Keep large deflection on to take care if the simulation runs into non linearity.
5. Boundarty condition:
Fixed support: Select all holes as shown below and give a fixed support.

Force: Assign a vertically downward force of 15 KN as shown below.

6. Request for the result and solve.
RESULT AND CONCLUSION :
Equivalent strain plot:

In case 1 location of max strain is different from location in case 2 and 3. Also strain is less in case 1. which is due to high strength of Stainless steel . It resist the deformation hence the strain is less. The same is supported in below deformation plot.
Directional deformation plot (Y-direction)

CASE 1with Stainless steel have lesser deformation of the 3 cases.
Von mises stress pot of weld

The plot shows that stress generated in case 1 is more, SS reduce the deformation hence stress will be more.
