Week 2 Railwheel and Track
OBJECTIVE :
Perform a static structural analysis on the Railwheel and Track setup and
Case 1: Multiply the bearing load by 5 times and compare the results with the load of 100000 N (As done in week 2 video). Compare the Total Deformation, Equivalent stress and the life under both the loads
Case 2: Implement a User defined result and calculate the Total Deformation from this result and check if it is the same as that obtained by the inbuilt result by ANSYS for a load of 100000 N.
PROBLEM SETUP:
For the 2 bearing loads, the preprocessing is the same as shown below.
1. Import the model and check the same.
2. Open Model in static structural. Check the geometry and assign Structural steel as material

3. Create a frictional contact as shown below.

4. create a frictionless contact as shown below.

5. To fix the rail, create a boady-ground fixed joint for the rail.

6. In this case there is a combination of translation and rotation. To move along the rail tanslation motion is given.

7.To keep the wheel moving in the same plane planar joint is provided for wheel
8. Generate the mesh with blobal size of 50mm and sizing on selected surface as 35 mm

9. Set the analysis setting as shown below

10. Assign Joint displacement as shown below.

11. Assign bearing load of 100000 N & 500000 N respectively.

12. Request for result
Case 1 : Total Deformation , stress and Life
Case 2 : User defined deformation using expression. Total deformation is vector sum of deformation in 3 direction . Total deformation = Sqrt((Ux)^2+(Uy)^2+(Uz)^2)

Result :
CASE 1:
1. Total Deformation plot :

In both the cases of bearing load max total deformation remains the same.
2. Equivalent Stress

When bearing load is 100000 N max stress is observed to be 94.035 MPa and when bearing load is 500000 N max stress is observed to be 364.94 MPa.
3. Life Cycle:

Min life under 100000 N bearing load is 6.0598 e5 cycles but when bearing load increased to 500000 N life is reduced to 3590.6 cycles Which shows increasing the bearing load have reduced the the life.
Case 2: User defined plot

Both User defined plot and total deformation plaot shows the same result.
Conclusion :
When bearing load is increased from 100000 N to 500000 N though Max total deformation remains the same ,max equivalent stress have increased (more than the tensile yield strenght of structural steel) and the life is reduced.
Both User defined plot(deformation) and Total deformation plot shows same result
