Challenge

Week 7-Long Piston With Cam

AIM:

To simulate the Long piston With Cam for their directional deformation, stress and strain using ansys workbench.

OBJECTIVES:

    • For this challenge, you will have to perform a transient analysis on a piston and cam mechanism model that has been provided to you. You need to run the analysis with Frictionless contact, Frictional with 0.1 and 0.2 as the frictional contact for a total of 3 cases. Find out the Equivalent Stress, Directional Deformation and Equivalent Elastic Strain and compare them for all the three cases. Give an inference as to why the results vary between cases.
  • case_1: Analysis with Frictionless contact
  • case_2: Analysis with Frictional contact with 0.1
  • case_3: Analysis with Frictional contact with 0.2

PROCEDURES:

  • Drop the Transient structural from the analysis settings.
  • Allocate the required material from the engineering data.
  • Then import the geometry, then open the model.

Materials:

Structural steel

Geometry:

  • First change the default name to CAM FOLLOWER,BARREL CAM,BARREL.
  • Assign the selected material for geometry parts.
  • Then change the stiffness behavior is a Rigid, for barrel and barrel cam.

Connections

  • Select all contact and right click on Flip on Contact/Target.
  • Select the CAM FOLLOWER to barrel, unselect the CAM FOLLOWER rod.
  • Then select the both contact and make frictionless.
  • Now insert the body to ground fixed support and fixed to the barrel.
  • Then insert the body to ground revolute, select the BARREL CAM and apply.
  • Insert the body to body Translational joint, select the CAM FOLLOWER.

Mesh:

  • Now open the mesh, insert the sizing
  • Select the CAM FOLLOWER and path of travel on the BARREL CAM.
  • In details, use adaptive sizing is yes. Generate mesh.

Boundary conditions:

  • Now transient structural, insert the joint load.
  • Joint in revolute - Ground to barrel cam and type is rotation and magnetuide is tabular data.

Auto time stepping = ON

Defined by = Time

Initial time = 0.1

Minimum time=5e-2

Maximum time= 0.2

Large Deflection = ON

Weak spring = Program controlled

Stabilization = constant

Energy dissipation ratio = 0.1

Activation for the first substep = yes

Output controlls = Make all outputs yes

Soluitions:

  • After giving proper boundary conditions, create desired solutions for output results, create solutions for Directional deformation, stress and strain. slove evaluate for solutions.
  • Find out the Equivalent Stress, Directional Deformation and Equivalent Elastic Strain and compare them for all the three cases. Give an inference as to why the results vary between cases.

RESULTS:

case_1 Frictionless

Directional Deformation And Graph

Equivalent Elastic Strain And Graph

Equivalent Stress And Graph

case_2

Frictional And Frictional coefficient is 0.1

Directional Deformation And Graph

Equivalent Elastic Strain And Graph

Equivalent Stress And Graph

case_3

Equivalent Stress And Graph

RESULTS

case_1 Frictionless

case_2

Frictional And Frictional coefficient is 0.1

case_3

Frictional And Frictional coefficient is 0.2

CONCLUSION

To simulate the Long piston With Cam runned successfully. In this simulation case_1 is Frictionless, case_2 and case_3 is frictional. Case_1 value is less than compare to case_2 and case_3.Directional deformation, case_2 and case_3 is alomst same, case_1 value is compare to other cases is less value. case_1 Elastic strain value is high compare to other cases Stress value.
