WEEK 6
CHALLENGE 5
MESHING OF HOOD MODEL
OBJECTIVE
To mesh a model of hood and satisfy the specified quality checks as below.
INITIAL STUDY
Hood or bonnet is the hinged cover over the engine of motor vehicles. Hoods can open to allow access to the engine compartment, or on rear-engine and some mid-engine vehicles for maintenance and repair. It is made up of an inner part ,outer part , latch assembly and hinges.
PROCEDURE
1.Initially the model was imported to the hypermesh geometry. The model is divided into 5 parts, the inner extract, the outer extract, latch assembly and the hinges.
2.Now using midsurface option in the geometry, the midsurface is created for all the parts in offset+planes+sweep option.
3.An autocleanup and edge clean-ups are followed to ensure a better coverage.
Figure 1: midsurface of inner body figure 2: midsurface of outer body
Figure 3: midsurface of hinges figure 4: midsurface of latch assembly
Figure 5: midsurfaces of all parts attached
4.2D mesh is then generated in mixed by splitting the surfaces and by using symmetricity of the parts. As the durability is to be satisfied, maximum of rotational quads were avoided. The inner and outer part has symmetric shapes and thus was able to use reflect option in tools to create the other half. The mesh generated for each surface is as below.
Figure 6a and 6b: meshed parts attached
5.The quality checks were done by check elements option and by setting the criterias specified in the question for each model and then assembled.
Quality index cleanup tools and element cleanups were also performed to satisfy all the quality checks.
CHALLENGE STUDY OUTCOME AND RESULT
The meshing was performed with maximum rotational quads avoided and could satisfy all the quality checks.
