Meshing the Hood component of a car by following the quality parameters with proper mesh flow.
Objective: Meshing the given component by following the below mentioned quality criteria.
CAD model images:
Outer hood component
Hinge body 1
Hinge body 2
Latch body
Inner hood component
Procedure:
- The given component is a hood of a car which consists of various sub-components such as inner body, outer body, Latch body, Hinge body 1, Hinge body 2.
- The process that needs to be done on these components are as follows:
- Generating midsurface and geometry clean up on the given component.
- Meshing the given component with low tria concentration and proper mesh flow by following the given quality parameters and assign a thickness. Here thickness value is given as 2.5 mm.
- First, import the given model into Hypermesh using import geometry feature.
- Enter all the mentioned quality parameters in the “criteria file settings” in the preferences tab as shown below and click on “Apply” & OK.
Outer body:
- Now turn off all the other sub-components & turn on the outer body component.
- Delete the solid part from the component & then proceed to extract the midsurface from the outer body. In order to do that go to the “midsurface” option in the geometry tab. Now, click on the surface option drop down & choose “displayed” or “all” to select the entire surface of the component and click on extract to create a midsurface.
Outer body midsurface
- Now to perform geometry cleanup, mesh the component part by part by selecting a proper element size and carefully check for any misconnections or gaps and make sure there is a proper mesh flow throughout the component with low tria concentration.
- As the outer body is symmetrical, work on one half of the body and it can be reflected to the other side later.
- Check whether the meshed component satisfies the quality criteria by clicking quality index tab in the 2D section of the panel.
- If the elements fail at some places it can be seen in yellow & red colors. For this, place the cursor on the failed elements & click on the element optimize button and use other options in the quality index tab to fix them.
- After everything is fixed reflect the one half of the meshed part to the other side by using “reflect” option in the tools tab.
- For this select the elements on the meshed part and duplicate them so that even after reflecting they stay in their original place without totally shifting to the other side as shown in below images.
Inner body:
- Now turn on the inner body component to work on & turn off all the other sub-components.
- Delete the solid part from the component & then proceed to extract the midsurface from the inner In order to do that go to the “midsurface” option in the geometry tab. Now, click on the surface option drop down & choose “displayed” or “all” to select the entire surface of the component and click on extract to create a midsurface.

Hinge body:

- The same process is done on the other body of the hinge.
Latch body:
- Now turn on the latch body component to work on & turn off all the other sub-components.
