Week 6 Challenge

1.Summarize your study for the bending moment, shear force and deflection diagrams for the elements of the model

BENDING MOMENT DIAGRAM : Bending moment is the plot of bending moment drawn for the whole span of the structure, It gives the idea of how a structure bends when external loads are acted upon a structure. It helps for analysis of the structure under a given load and aids in designing of structure to be in safe zone of bending or no bending. For simply supoorted spans it will be in parabolic shape and maximum bending at midpoint of span which will be generally seen in most of the cases. The sagging part of the bending moment diagram depicts the positive bending moemnt and the hogging part depicts the negative bending moment. The bending moment for a frame is shown below.

SHEAR FORCE DIAGRAM : Shear force diagram is the diagram that shows Shear forces that are acted along the span of the beam. Shear is the force that is acting along the surface , mostly it is due to wind forces as dead live load will be majorly causing bending. It helps in understanding the strength of walls or columns or beams to resist against the shear force that acts due to the loads. More shear force means the structure is under danger, lesser the shear force better the life of the structure. So members are to be designed for minimum shear force.

DEFLECTION DIAGRAM : Deflection Diagram is the diagram which shows how the structure deflects due to all the forces and moments acting on the structure. Deflection means movement od members or nodes from the original position of the structure. It is specified by both angle and distance. Lesser the deflection the better the structure is, and lesser will be chance of failure.

2.Based on the analysis design the members and outline the thought process in selecting the member sizes along with the foundation design

AIM : To perform analysis and design the members accordingly and create foundation.

TOOLS USED : Seismic wizard, Analysis Settings, 1st order linear, Properties window, scene content window, Section, Releases, Pad Base column, Validate.

PROCEDURE :

1. Open the file that is created previously and click on seismic wizard under the seismic load tool in the load tab.

2. In the dialogue that appears click on next after choosing code spectra option.

3. Click on next after rechecking the dimenions of the structure

4. Check if No plan irregularities,No vertical irregularities and use model spectrum analysis is clicked and click next

5. Choose the RC -steel composite type of structure in the structure type and click next.

6.Choose braced frame structure and click next.

7. Choose all the loads by selecting and clicking the move right button and click on next.

8. Dont delete the previously created load cases and click on replace only combinations generated by this runa nd click on finish.

9. The created load cases by that run can be found under loadcase cominations in bottom left corner dropdown.

9. Click on Analyze and click on settings and check if all the modulation factors are set to 1 or not, if not change it to 1 and click ok.

10. Click on 1st order linear under 1st order analysis.

11. Click on Effective seismic load that is created in the select loading dialogue box that appears and click ok.

12. Errors will be shown in the status window read the errors appropriatley and change the section.

13. As my errors included nodal instability due to moment and torsion, I changed the releases of beams as fully fixed instead of pinned for fixty ends.

14. I have also changed the section of the beams and columns to UK universal beams and columns to the highest sectional dimensions.

15. Then again click on 1st order linear and perform analysis, all the errors are solved is shown in the status window.

16. Now, click on Pad base column in Foundation tab and choose all the points where column exists to create foundation.

RESULT : The structure is validated to be error free.

DEFLECTIONS ON STRUCTURE :

THE FOUNDATION IS CREATED AT ALL COLUMNS :
