Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Aim:

To perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate and determine the type of deformation that has occured to the plate in question.

Model:

The model which is used is a quater of the real model to be tested. Here we use the symmetyic property of the model as a tool to evaluate results quickly. Meshing is done to 1 mm. The plate is assigned Structural Steel NL while the sphere is Structural Steel. The contact provide is frictional with a frictional co-efficient of 0.74. The bottom of the plate is fixed and a displacement of 4 mm is given along the -Y axis applied on the top side of the quater sphere.

A total of 4 steps have been taken to process the results. Thus the sphere displaces into the plate and is then retracted back.

Result:

Conclusion:

From the simulation we can observe that the plate has not gone or reverted back to its orignial shape after the removal of the external force. Thus this is indeed a plastic deformation.
