Week 3 Verification of Weld Joints
Objective:
To determine the Directional Deformation and equivalent strain experienced by the setup as well as to identify the weld joint that experiences the highest equivalent stress among different material and compare the results.
Model:
Meshing is done by giving the plates a face sizing of 6mm, whereas the ribs are given a default mesh. Frictional contacts are given between the plates with each other and the ribs with a frictional coefficient of 0.2. Boundary conditions are in place at the holes which are to be fixed or bolted to a wall. A load of 15000 N is applied on the rectangluar hole of the small plate. The load is applied along the Y axis.
Observations:
Case I:-
In Case I, the material for all the components are taken as Stainless Steel.
a) Equivalent Stress
b) Equivalent Strain
c) Directional Deformation
d) Equivalent Stress at the Weld Joints
Case II:-
In Case II, the weldments are assigned Aluminium alloy(high strength, wrought) while the plates remain stainless steel.
a) Equivalent Stress
b) Equivalent Strain
c) Directional Deformation
d) Equivalent Stress at the Weld Joints
Case III:-
In Case III, the weldments are assigned Bronze while the plates remain stainless steel and ribs are given Copper.
a) Equivalent Stress
b) Equivalent Strain
c) Directional Deformation
d) Equivalent Stress at the Weld Joints
Results:
| Calculations | Case I | Case II | Case II |
| Max Directional Deformation | 0.35003 | 0.36413 | 0.39398 |
| Max Equivalent Stress | 348.35 | 353.18 | 358.06 |
| Max Equivalent Strain | 1.9024e-3 | 3.3252e-3 | 3.1769e-3 |
| Max Equivalent Stress on joints | 294.02 | 245.2 | 253.8 |
Conclusion:
All simulations ran smoothly, having only a single step required convergence occured in less time. From the above results we can conclude that -
- Max Deformation is seen in Case III, this must be due to low Yield Strength of Copper and Bronze causing the parts to deform faster.
- Max Equivalent Stress seen in Case III, where Brazing is done.
- Max Equivalent Stress at Weld Joints is seen in Case I.
- Max Equivalent Stress Overall is seen in Case II.
