Week 2 Railwheel and Track

Aim:

Perform a static structural analysis on the Railwheel and Track setup

Model:

Material used is Structural Steel. Meshing of surfaces is 50mm and in the areas where contact is high face sizing is done by 35mm.

Procedure:

The joints are laid Body-Ground.

The track is given as fixed support whereas the wheel is translational along the length of the track at the contact between shaft and wheel.

Testing for Total Deformation, Equivalent Stress and Life(Fatigue) is done and compared with a User Define Result by inputing a Expression to solve for Total Deformation.

Loads are A - 10000 N and B - 500000 N

Observations[ Case I ]

A) Bearing Load of 100000 N

i) Total Deformation

Max Deformation : 999.02 mm

ii) Equivalent Stress

Max Stress : 95.648 MPa Min Stress : 6.9757e-10 MPa

iii) Life

B) Bearing Load 500000 N

i) Total Deformation

Max Deformation : 999.08 mm

ii) Equivalent Stress

Max Stress : 388.34MPa Min Stress : 3.0868e-10 MPa

iii) Life

Comparison :

S.No Bearing Load Max Equivalent stress Max Total Deformation Life Cycle
MPa mm Max Min
I 100000 N 95.648 999.02 1e6 5.4946e-5
II 500000 N 388.34 999.08 1e6 296.3

Observation [ Case II ] :

User defined results are functions which are used to enhance the features for solving the problem based on out requirement. Here the requirement being for Total Deformation. To ensure the results be evaluated we need to provide an expression inorder for Total Deformation to be generated. The expression is given as

Total deformation : Sqrt(Ux^2 + Uy^2 + Uz^2)

where U is the system deformation along the three axis

On providing and generating we obtain ( done for bearing load of 100000 N )

Conclusion:

On reviewing the data presented in the table we see that the Total Deformation in both loads are same. The Max Equivalent Stress is high in B due to higher loading and the point at which its max is the point of contact between wheel and track. Life of B is 296 cycles

On comparing the User defined results to that of the inbuilt result obtained from simulation we see that both the values are same
