Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate
Sphere pressing on a plate
AIM :
For this challenge, perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate.
Use Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non Linear.
Press the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it. The plastic deformation must be captured by you. Attach appropriate images and make a detailed report.
Process:
- Download the model and import into ansys geometry workbench
- Open Engineering Data and add the Structural steel Non-Linear in material section

- Open geometry and check the model

- Update & Open Model

- Click on the geometry and rename later for plate add material as structural steel NL

- Add the symmetry for both cut-faces as they are symmetric

- Make the connections between Sphere & plate as frictional with coefficient 0.74

- Check on the mesh ( Kept as Defualt )

- Add 4 steps in the analysis settings

- In static structure add Fix for back of the plate so that the plate should not move as the sphere impacts on plate

- Add displacement for sphere so that it moves in y-direction of 4mm

- In solutions we add:
- Directional deformation (For all bodies)

- Equivalent stress ( For Plate)

THE Equivalent stress ( For Plate) WAS FOUND TO BE 3307.4MPa
- Equivalent Plastic strain ( For Plate)

- Equivalent Elastic strain ( For Plate)

THE TOTAL STRAIN =Equivalent Elastic strain ( For Plate)+Equivalent Plastic strain ( For Plate)
=0.016542+1.822
=1.838542mm
- Directional deformation ( For Plate)

THE TOTAL /FINAL DEFORMATION AFTER SPHERE IS REMOVED IS 0.32931MM
