Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Objective:

Perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate and study the plastic deformation of plate.

  1. Analysis System: Static Structural
  2. Material Properties:
  • Plate – Structural Steel NL
  • Sphere – Structural Steel
  1. Mesh:
    1. Element Order – Programmed Control
    2. Element Size – 0.8 mm

4. Contact

Frictional contact between plate and sphere

Frictional Co-efficient – 0.74

Contact Body - Sphere

Target Body – Plate

  1. Symmetric Region

As model is symmetric so we take only quarter part of the model in Ansys static study to reduce the computational time while simulation. Please refer below image related to applied symmetry region in model.

  1. Analysis Setting

No of Steps: 4

Large Deformation: ON

  1. Fixed Support
  • Fixed Support is given on lower face of plate

  1. Load

Displacement is given on sphere with four load steps as -2, -4,0,0.

Results:

  1. Equivalent Plastic Strain

In this analysis Sphere presses the plate by 4 mm in negative y direction and again move back to original place. While this press operation is observed that plate is getting deform permanently. And same is clear from below Equivalent Plastic Strain result plot of Sheet.

  1. Total Deformation

It is noticed that from result plot of total deformation, as plate is going under permanent deformation i.e. plastic deformation by almost 3.39 mm.

  1. Equivalent Stress

  1. Equivalent Elastic Strain
