Challenge

Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

AIM:

To simulate the Sphere pressing on a plate for their total deformation, stress and strain using ansys workbench.

OBJECTIVES:

  • For this challenge, perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate.
  • Use Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non Linear.
  • Press the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it. The plastic deformation must be captured by you. Attach appropriate images and make a detailed report.

PROCEDURES:

  • Drop the static structural from the analysis settings.
  • Allocate the required material from the engineering data.
  • Then import the geometry, then open the model.

Materials:

Structural steel

Structural steel NL

Geometry:

  • First change the default name to SPHERE And PLATE.
  • Assign the selected material for PLATE structural steel NL , SPHERE- structural steel.

Connections

  • Click the contact and delete the default contact. Then right click on contact and insert the manual contact region.
  • Now set the contact and target, contact is SPHERE and target is PLATE.
  • Now select the both contact

Type = frictional

Frictioal coefficent =0.74

The Frictional Coefficient is reffer from roymech useful tribiology tables.

SYMMETRY:

  • Insert the symmetry, and right click on symmetry and insert the symmetry then choose the body and choose z axis.
  • Again insert the symmetry, and right click on symmetry and insert the symmetry then choose the body and choose x axis.

Mesh:

  • Now open the Mesh, generate the default mesh.

Boundary conditions:

No of step = 4

Slover type = Direct

Large deflection = ON

  • Now insert the displacement, use face selecters to select the top part of the spher, and choose y components.
  • insert the fixed support, fixed the bottum side of the plate,

Soluitions:

  • After giving proper boundary conditions, create desired solutions for output results, create solutions for Directional deformation, stress and strain. slove evaluate for solutions.

RESULTS:

Directional Deformation

Equivalent Strain

Equivalent Strain

Equivalent Stress

Equivalent Stress

RESULT

  • Simulation of Sphere On A Plate is successfully runned. From the analysis it is found that beyound the elastic limit the material remains in the plastic state, even after removed load.
  • The maximum Equivalent stress is developed in the plate 330.7MPa, that is higher then the youngs modulus of the structural steel NL, as the stress developed is higher then the youngs modulus, the plate got plastically deformed.
  • In this case, 4mm displacement of sphere is visible from the simulation, the directional deformation value is 0.32917mm
