Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Objective:

  • To perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate.
  • The plastic deformation on the plate is captured.
  • The symmetry operation is performed to reduce the computational time and cost.

Case setup and Execution:

CAD model:

The parts are: 1. Sphere, 2. Plate

Materials used:

Structural Steel

Structural Steel Non-linear

Contacts:

A user defined contact is defined.

The outer face of the sphere is selected for contact bodies.

The upper face of the plate is selected for the target bodies.

Mesh:

The method is inserted to get the tetahedron elements.

The mesh size of 1mm is used to get the finer mesh.

The meshed model is shown below:

Symmetry:

The symmetry has to be defined as only one-fourth of the model is considered.

The below figure shows the 2 faces are selected as plane of symmetry and symmetry normal as the x-axis.

The below figure shows the 2 faces are selected as plane of symmetry and symmetry normal as the z-axis.

Analysis settings:

We have used 4 steps to solve the problem.

The solver type is enabled as the direct solver and as the problem is non-linear, the large deflection is enabled.

Constraints and Loads:

The plate has to be constained in all directions.

So, the bottom face of the plate is fixed as shown below

The displacement is provided to move the sphere onto the plate.

As the main objective of the problem is to observe the plasticity of the plate, we need to retract back the sphere.

The displacement is provided in the negative y-direction and is retracted back as shown in the table below.

Results:

Total deformation:

Equivalent Elastic Strain

Equivalent Stress

Directional deformation

Equivalent stress of the plate

Equivalent strain of the plate

Conclusion:

The analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate is performed and the plastic deformation on the plate is captured.

The symmetry operation is performed to reduce the computational time and cost.
