Week - 5 - Modelling Spotwelds

SPOT WELD SIMULATION USING LS-DYNA

Objective: To make spot weld connections between the two given plates using beam elements and Hexa elements.

Procedure: The Given model is imported on to the GUI of LS-DYNA pre-post. The connection is made using the beam and Hexa element first giving it required property cards for the necessary characteristics it needs to carry out during the simulation. The plates are then made to crash against rigid wall which is created in LS-DYNA pre-post.

Step 1: Import the given model onto the LS-DYNA pre-post window as in the keyword input file.

Step 2: Assign the necessary material card and section card with the right configuration for steel material. This is done for both the plates as well as the 2 types of the spot weld connection made.

Step 3: Create a rigid body for the model to crash against.

Step 4: Give the specified initial velocity to the model. The specified speed is 50 kmph, which is converted into gm mm ms and put into Velocity terms.

Step 5: Give the type of contact that has to be made between the model and the rigid wall. In this case the “automatic single surface” type of contact is chosen. The spot weld is “tied shell edge to surface type of contact is given.

Step 6: Give the appropriate control termination value.

Step 7: Enable the necessary keys from database such Binary d3 plot and from ASCII the necessary database cards.

Step 8: Save the file and compile the file.

Step 9: Open the d3 plot file which created as per the given inputs in LS-DYNA pre-post. Check the animation and von mises stress value.

Conclusion: The given model was given the spot weld connection at the necessary points of the model and was simulated in recommended conditions.
