Week 5 Challenge : Surface wrap on Automotive Assembly

AIM:

To study and perform the surface wrapping on the given automotive assembly containing the Engine, transmission, and gearbox.

OBJECTIVE:

First, we get individual ANSA model components which are Engine, Gearbox, and Transmission. Next step we do a geometrical clean on the individual models to make sure to delete the surface which is unwanted. Once geometry clean-up is done we merge all three components into one automotive assembly. Finally, we perform the surface wrapping on the automotive assembly.

TOOLS USED:

  1. DELETE OPTION
  2. FILL HOLE OPTION
  3. FACES(DELETE)
  4. FACES(FITTED)
  5. MERGE OPTION
  6. CONSTANT WRAP OCTREE: EDIT option

PROCEDURE:

GEOMETRY CLEANING FOR ENGINE

  • Engine ANSA model is provided as shown above and we can see there are unwanted components that are present which has to be deleted. By using the DELETE option we delete the unwanted surface or components.

  • In order to delete all the components one by one, it would be a tedious process hence we use OR option==> select the PID option==> select the required components so that we get to unwanted components to be deleted.

  • Clear any overlapping surfaces by identifying them and deleting them by using the FACES==> DELETE option.

  • Once the geometry clean-up is done for surface wrapping we have to make sure the model should not contain any open surfaces. Hence the unnecessary pocket holes have to be closed by using FACES==>NEW==>FITTED option==>ok.

  • The final model after geometry clean-up is shown below.

GEOMETRY CLEANING FOR TRANSMISSION

  • Transmission ANSA model is provided as shown above and we can see there are unwanted components that are present which has to be deleted.
  • Clear any overlapping surfaces by identifying them and deleting them by using the FACES==> DELETE option.
  • A triple con issue is take care by deleting unwanted surface but note that some triple cons are valid.

  • Final geometry clean up model for transmission is shown below.

GEOMETRY CLEANING FOR GEAR BOX

  • Gear box consists single this clear by deleting the surface and creating new surface by using CONS==> select FILL HOLE option==> select the single cons==>ok.
  • A triple con issue is take care by deleting unwanted surface but note that some triple cons are valid.

  • Final geometry clean up model for gear box is shown below.

MERGE OPTION

  • Once the geometry clean up is done for all the model we use merge option to assemble the parts one by one.
  • First we go to the engine ansa model go to FILE option==> go to MERGE option.
  • Select the first TRANSMISSION model==>ok==> we get MERGE PARAMETERS==>ok(NOTE make sure we don't get any error messages once the merge is done).
  • Similarly we do repeat the above steps for GEAR BOX model to be merged into the engine model.

Automotive assembly is done by merging all the components(Engine, transmission, and gear box). Final step is to make sure the are no open surfaces or holes which causes irregular surface wrapping. Hence we close any open holes by using FACES==>NEW==>FITTED option==>ok.

FINAL AUTOMOTIVE ASSEMBLY

SURFACE WRAPPING:

  • Surface wrapping is the process of creating a air tight geometry to carry out the external surface analysis of the automotive assembly.
  • For surface wrapping first we open CONSTANT WRAP OCTREE: EDIT option==> look for octree defination.

  • Once we open the dialog box we get 0 contents 0 CFD parameters, we have to assign this parameters.
  • Before assigning the above parameters we have to use COMPRESS option to remove any unwanted PIDs.
  • Double click on CFD parameters==> give TARGET length as 3mm==>ok.

  • Again double click on CONTENTS==> we get pop window CONTENT OF OCTREE SCENERIO==> select all the PIDs and transfer==> click Ok.

  • Once above steps are done we get 101 content in CONSTANT WRAP OCTREE then finally we click on RUN option to perform surface wrapping.

CONCLUSION:

I have successfully solved the geometrical errors for all the models(Engine, transmission, and gear box) and merged all the models into one automotive assembly. Finally I have performed the surface wrapping operation on the automotive assembly.
