Week 5 Challenge : Surface wrap on Automotive Assembly

Aim - To perform a surface wrap on the given models.

Objective- To achieve a meshed surface of the given model to perform CFD

Procedure-

The given model had many unwanted surfaces in the form of rings and other shapes. My task was to identify which elements are necesary and to delete the unecessary surfaces. For this, I used the NOT boolean with PID selection and I hid the necessary parts to reveal the unecessary elements.

There were many duplicate suraces also which needed to be deleted.

There were also a lot of open areas in the models which I needed to patch and close it up. Otherwise the meshed surface will not generate smoothly.

In the area near the pipes some surface had to be deleted and new surface was created.

I followed this procedue for all the three models.

Next step was to merge the models together in the same window. For this I used the merge option and imported the gearbox and transmission models to the engine model window. After import the models were merged

Then I opened the PID manager and deleted the empty PIDs with the compress command.

To create the surface wrap I went Mesh module ans selected Wrap command in the Elements tab. In the wrap command I selected the constant wrap. This option generates a surface with constant mesh. For the parameters, I gave mesh length as 4 and for the contents i selected all the active PIDs.

Then I hit the RUN command. This generated a surface over the entire model with a mesh of 4mm.To check for the surface I hid the front surfaces and it showed a mesh surface with a hollow body.

CONCLUSION -
For surface meshing, we should ensure that the outer surface of the model is clean and free from unecessary elements. The holes and other openings need to closed up before generating the surface for CFD.
