Week 5 Challenge

Calculate the design wind loads for the bridges to be designed at Mumbai.

    • The height of the bridge above ground level is 9 m.
    • It is located in open terrain with well scattered obstructions of height less than 10m.
    • The pier size is 1.5 x 1.5 m.
    • Apply the wind load in Staad.pro

Design Calculation-

1) Dead load of Structure -

Substructure dead Load - Pier - 1.5*1.5*10*2.5*8 - 450 Kn/m

Superstructure dead Load - Longitudinal Beam - 5*1.2*1.5*6*2.5 - 135 Kn/m

Cross Beam - 4*1.2*1.2*4*2.5 - 57.6 Kn/m

Deck Slab - 15*4*0.25*2.5 - 37.5 Kn/m

Total Dead Load - 135+ 57.6+37.5 +450 = 680.1 Kn/m

2) Design Wind Speed -

Vz = Vb * K1 * K2 * K3 * K4

Vz = Basic wind speed 44 * 1 * 1 * 1 * 1.15 = 50.6 m/s

Wind pressure Pz = 0.6 * Vz ^2 =0.6 *50.6*50.6 = 1536.2 N/m2 = 1.536 Kn/m2
