Week 5 Bending of iPhone

AIM: To perform the simulation for bending of Iphone.

Procedure:

  • First we will import the given geometry and will do some changes if required.

  • So we lower the number of faces in the model. For that we edit the geometry in spaceclaim. For that go to the REPAIR option then select the faces and hit on merge.
  • After that we will rename the components. And assign the material to the components. For display we are assigning glass, for frame we are assigning aluminum and for inside we are assigning polyethylene.
  • Now select the all finger except the one thumb, because are giving translation motion to it. And assign the rigid behaviour to all the other fingers as shown:

  • Now after that we will assign the contacts to the component for the frame and display it will be a bonded contact and for other it will be frictionless contact.

  • Now after this we have to create a joints for that we are going to fixed the all the fingers on the top.
  • So insert a joint and creat body to ground connection and type as a fixed. Create a fixed joint for each finges as shown:

  • Now after this we are assigning the translational joint for the fingers below the phone. Keeping the X axis in upward direction as shown:

  • After this done we will mesh the components, so the we will be meshing the back side of the frame and the faces of thumb that touches to the frame as 4mm and for other the mesh size will be default. And select smoothing as low.

  • Now after that for analysis setting we are making it in 8 steps. Make this changes and also put the output controls as YES.

  • After that we will fixed the inside component of the phone as shown:

  • Also we are going to assign displacement.

  • Now after that we will assign the joint load.

  • Do the same with the other finger too. Now after that we will add the result we want and solve the problem.

CASE 1: Finger are at actual position.

Directional deformation

Equivalent Stress:

Life of the Aluminium alloy for the case

Factor of Aluminium Alloy NL

CASE 2: Moving pushing fingers at diiferent position Z=22.5 mm and X=10 mm.

Directional deformation

Equivalent Stress:

Life of the Aluminium alloy for the case

Factor of Aluminium Alloy NL

Sr No. CASE Displacement Deformation (mm) Stress (MPa) Life Safety Factor
1 1 5.56 864.55 225 15
2 2 8 906.94 225 15

Conclusion:

  • As we see the deformation and stress increases as the fingers are moved more toward the middle of the phone.
  • Life and safety factors are constant in both the condition.
