Week 5 Bending of iPhone
AIM: The main aim of this week chalenge is to perform a bending simulation of iphone for two different cases.For both the cases compare the results of the stress,strain,life and factor plots and give a detailed explanation for the plots.
PROCEDURE:
step 1: Open the ansys workbench module and select the static structural analysis.
step 2: Now open the engineering data library and add aluminium alloy non linear material, glass and polyethylene.

step 3: right click the geomentry tab and select import geomentry --> browse --> select the file --> open.
step 4: The model contains multiple faces.To merge the faces go to repair tab and click merge faces.

step 5: Now open the geomentry in mechanical modeller.

step 6:Now assign the material for the phone components and finger.

step 7:Now create the contact between the phone and finger.

step 8: Now create the fixed and translational joint for the components.

step 9:Now create a mesh sizing of 3mm for the contact face between phone and pushing finger.

step 10: now cange the analysis settings

step 11: Now apply the boundary condition for the parts.

step 12: Now run the simulation.
step 13: Now include the total deformation,Equivalent stress and strain in output files.
step 14: Now change the model as per the question and run the simulation
Step 13: Compare the result plot and give a detailed explanation.

CASE 2:

CONCLUSION:
| EQUIVALENT STRESS | DIRECTIONAL DEFORMATION | ELASTIC STRAIN | SAFETY FACTOR | LIFE | ||||
| MIN | MAX | MIN | MAX | MIN | MAX | |||
| CASE A | 3.5929 | 594.89 | -1.4717 | 4.2245 | 4.11E-16 | 0.1354 | 15 | 133.49 |
| CASE B | 4.124 | 382.86 | -0.832 | 2.9778 | 0.00019 | 0.0054 | 15 | 131.54 |
Based on the result for both the cases we could conclude that the equivalent stress is greater in case 1 than case 2, this is because that the load is acting at near on end of the phone and at the second case it is acting at the center of the phone which helps in distributing the load so that the maximum stress is not greater at one end. Due to the same reason the elastic strain is also max and min in case1 when compared to case2. For safety factor there is no much difference when compared to the two cases. For the life factor the case 1 has slightly higher life when compared to case 2 and this is because in case1 there are areas which are far away from the load which has ligher life and in case 2 the loads are acting almost at the center.
