Week 5 Bending of iPhone

OBJECTIVE:

  • Setting up the model for bending and compare the results with different marterials and different cases

Steps:

Import material:-

  • First import the required materials like Aluminium alloy NL, Polyethelene
  • Duplicate Polyethelene and rename i as glass, edit the properties like shown below
  • Duplicate aluminium alloy NL for case 2, with above mentioned SN curve

Import Model:-

  • Import the model and open in space claim and see for any abnormality in model
  • There is no change in the model for case 1
  • For case 2 move the bottom two fingers x=22.5mm;z=10mm

Assign materials:-

  • Firstly rename the parts for our convinience
  • Assign Glass material for Display
  • Assign Aluminium alloy material for Frame
  • Assign Polyethelene material for Inside
  • For all the fingers let the stiffness behaviour as Rigid

Create contact:-

  • Delete the default contacts between the fingers
  • Rename the contacts based on thier definitions
  • Except Display to Frame contact change everything else to Frictionless contact
  • Bonded contact between Display-Frame

Create Joints:-

  • Create a fixed joint for all the upper fingers
  • Create a Translation joint for pushing fingers
  • Make sure the reference cordinates are in same direction

Mesh:-

  • Face sizing of 4mm for Frame's bottom surface anf pushing fingers
  • Keep smoothing quality as LOW

Analysis Settings:-

  • Solver type= Direct
    Weak springs=Program Controlled
    Large Deflection=ON
    Stabilization =Constant
    Method= Energy
    Enegergy Disipation ratio=0.1
    Activation for first substep= YES
    Output Controls= Everything as YES

Define Load:-

  • Define fixed support for Inside part
  • Define displacement for the frame keeping X=Z=Constant; Y=Free
  • Define Joint load for each pushing fingers
    Dof=X Displacement
    Type=Displacement
    Magnitude=Tabular data

Results and Conclusion:

Case 1:-

  • Directional Deformation in y Direction for Frame=5.108 mm
  • Equivalent Strain=0.16182 mm/mm
  • Equivalent Stress=829.88 Mpa

Case 2:-

  • Directional Deformation in y Direction for Frame=4.0932 mm
  • Equivalent Strain=0.11976 mm/mm
  • Equivalent Stress=1023.2 Mpa
  • Safety Factor=15

    Safety factor minimum=2.0278E-07
    Design life=1E+09 Cycles
  • Case Eq Stress(Mpa) Eq Strain(mm/mm) Deformation(mm)
    1 829.88 0.16182 5.108
    2 1023.2 0.11976 4.0932
