Week 5 Bending of iPhone

Aim of the project:

To perform the static structural analysis of bending of iPhone and capture directional deformation , Equivalent stress and strain on the case.

Analyze the results in the varied position of bottom finger with X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and with varied material condition for case.

Set Up

  1. In the Ansys workbench we chose static structural analysis and in engineering data we kept the material structural steel as it is and along with that, we added other materials like, Aluminum alloy NL, Polyethylene and Glass.
  2. After Importing the iPhone model in the Geometry, We opened Mechanical module by clicking Edit to the model tab.
  3. Renamed the models accordingly and assigned material glass for the Display, Aluminum alloy for Frame and Polyethylene for Inside items. For Fingers we kept the material as it is but changed the stiffness behavior to Rigid. Only one pushing finger we kept as flexible.
  4. Now under connections we set all the necessary Frictionless and bonded contacts as shown below.

  1. Later we have added Fixed and translational joints as shown below.

  1. In the meshing we set face sizing of 4mm element size for Frame and pushing finger.

  1. Under analysis Settings We fixed the both sides of frame with fixed support and also set the step controls to 8 number of steps and 2 translational joints with 2mm increments and again reversal as shown below.
  2. Finally we requested the different solutions and got the results as shown below.

Directional deformation in Y axis :- Maximum 5.5795mm

Von-mises stress in the case is Maximum 643.25Mpa.

Equivalent Strain in frame is Max. 9.1176e-003 mm/mm

Force Reaction

Case 2:

In the Engineering, we have defined the S-N curve for the Aluminum Alloy material as shown below.

And also in Space claim, We moved the pushing finger in X axis by 22.5mm and in Z axis by 10mm

Now once again we requested the different solutions and got the results as shown below.

Directional deformation in Y axis :- Maximum 4.4119mm

Von-mises stress in the case is Maximum 419.27Mpa.

Equivalent Strain in frame is Max. 5.9658e-003 mm/mm

Life of the Aluminum alloy NL Frame.

Conclusion

Condition

Directional Deformation (Max.)

Max. Von-mises Stress (Mpa)

Max. Equivalent Strain

mm/mm

Case 1

5.5795mm

643.25Mpa

9.1176e-003 mm/mm

Case 2

4.4119 mm

419.27 MPa

5.9658e-003 mm/mm

We observed that in Case 2 when pushing fingers were moved to the center of the frame. The results look good as Load was equally getting distributed, there were less deformation and stress. .
