Week 4 Session 5
Answer-
There are basically four type of Power Converters.
1) AC to AC Converters
2) AC to DC Converters
3) DC to DC Converters
4) DC to AC converters
Out of above four, last three are used in Electric Vehicle.
1 AC to DC Converters- It is basically called rectifiers and it convert AC in to DC. now this rectified DC have some AC component which can be eleminated by filters. it is used to charge batteries.
Example - Bridge Rectifier, Full Wave Rectifier, Half Wave Rectifier
Bridge Rectifier

Half Wave Rectifier

Full Wave Rectifier

AC To DC converters are mainly used to charge DC Batteries and also in some cases to provides DC Supply to DC Machines and many more.
2) DC to DC Converters- It plays very important role in Electric Vehicle. it convert an unregulated DC input into regulated DC input which then can be used in controlled way according to the requirement. these are of different types-
Non Isolated Converters- In this type of converter input and output are electrically connected.
as Buck converter (used to reduce voltage level), Boost converter (used to increase voltage level), Buck Boost Converter (It is used to both buck and boost operation)
Buck Converter
Bost Converter
Buck Boost Converter
Isolated Converter- In these type of converter, output and input are electrically isolated. transformer is used for the isolation purpose.
as- flyback, forward, Half bridge, full bridge (the diagram of half bridge and full bridge is shown above).
Flyback Converter
Resonant Converter- These type of converter is used for the high power conversion. it contains network of inductors and capacitors (called resonant tank ) to tune at specified resonant frequency.
example- series resonant converter, parallel resonant converter.

Parallel Resonant Converter

DC to DC Converters are used for various auxiliary Loads like Car Air- Conditioning System, Music System, Head Lights, Dimmer, Horn of the vehicle (Buck Type Converter).
3) DC to AC Converter- In these type of converter DC supply is converted into AC supply so it is called as a inverter. it is used to supply 1 phase AC or 3 Phase AC supply to electric motor (according to requirement) from DC batteries source and it can control both magnitude and frequency of AC Voltage.
1 Phase Inverter- Half Bridge Inverter

1 Phase Inverter- Full Bridge Inverter

3 Phase Inverter- Voltage Source Inverter (Input is a voltage source)
3 Phase Inverter- current Source Inverter (Input is a current source)
DC to AC converter are used to convert stored DC energy into AC energy in our homes and in Electrive drives which use AC Motors and many more.
