Week 4 Session 5
Question 1 :
Explain the various applications of Power converters in an Electric vehicle. For Example what type of converter will you use for Horn which requires DC and less than 10V. Likewise come up with different applications
Answer
Applications of power converters in EVs:
* The Power converters are used in rectifiers which are used for the conversion of AC to DC
* Power converters are used in EVs for the motor drive control mechanism
* They are used in EVs for Inversion which is used for the supply of the AC motors where the battery supply voltage is DC.
Applications of power converters in EVs with examples:
For Headlights and Tail lamps: Power converters are used in EVs, in case of the headlights and tail lamps. As these lamps required small DC voltage. So in this case rectifiers are needed.
For Horn: The Power converters are necessary for the horn blowing, as these horn generally need low DC volatge. Here rectifiers are needed.
For AC motors: Power converters are required for the AC motors, because the battery unit in the vehicle is of DC supply, the AC motors needs AC supply to power, so in this case inverters are needed.
For Sensing unit: Converters are required for the sensing unit, as the types of sensors used in EVs are based on DC supply like ultrasonic, lidar, radar, camera sensing units. so buck converter can be employed to power them.
For Infotainment System : The Infotainment System in the vehicle are powered by the DC supply. As the battey unit supplies DC but the Infotainment System needs low voltage , so buck converter can be employed to power them.
For EVSE(ELectrical vehicle supply equipment) : In the EVs the EVSE are very important equipment for the vehicle charging purposes. So charge the battery unit we need DC supply but the domestic avaliable supply is AC , so it must be converted to DC using power converters(rectifiers)
For secondary motors: IN the EVs or any vehicle there are some secondary motors which are utilised for the sun-roof, windows, wiper motors operations, so those motors must be powered by the DC voltage in order to do their tasks. As the battery unit supplies DC supply, there must be buck, boost convereters must be employed.
