Week 4 Session 5

The power converters used in an electric vehicle are AC-DC converter, DC-DC converter, and DC-AC converter.

Applications of AC-DC converter:

  • Used for powering DC appliances that require a DC supply.
  • Used to provide polarised voltage in DC electric welding as DC welding helps to produce stable arcs as the current flows in one direction.
  • Mosquito repellers since half-wave rectifiers are used in them to drive the lead for the fumes.
  • In AM radio, half-wave rectifiers are used as signal peak detectors.

Applications of DC-DC converter:

  • In the case of EVs, the main DC/DC converter changes power from the onboard high-voltage battery into lower DC voltages used to power lights, wipers, and window controls which requires less than 12V.
  • Speed controllers for DC motors as it regulates the power supply.
  • Lighting and lamp controls

Applications of DC-AC converter:

  • DC power source usage as it converts the DC power source to an AC supply and can be used in AC appliances.
  • Uninterruptible power supplies(UPS) as it is a piece of mandatory equipment in it.
  • Used in PV systems as it generates DC power supply.
  • HVDC power transmission as it has lesser losses compared to HVAC transmission.
