Week 4 Session 5
Power converters:
1. DC to DC converter.
2. DC to AC coverter.
3. AC to DC converter.
4. AC to AC converter.
1. DC to DC converter in EV:
It converts unregulated DC input to regulated DC output.
- Delivering power to auxilliary loads operating at different loads such as, AC, Dimmer, Headlight, Horn, Wiper, Mirrors etc.
- Deliver power from battery to charger.
- Link between the HV and LV battery.
- LV battery link with the high voltage motor.
- Battery with ultra capacitors and battery with fuel cells as energy storage.
Examples:
- Buck converter
- Boost converter
- Buck-Boost Converter
- Flyback converter
- Half and full bridge converters
Converter modules:
- DCM - Discontinuous mode
- NBM - Non-bus isolated module.
- PRM - Power regulation module.
DC to AC Converter (Inverter):
It converts dc voltage to the ac voltage. It can control both the magnitude and frequency of output AC voltage.
- These are used in AC motors.
- Also used for single phase and three phase.
AC to DC converter(Rectifier):
It converts AC voltage to the DC voltage output.
- It is used for the on board charger.
- Also used for the power factor correction.
