Challenge

Week 4- Rolling operation

OBJECTIVE :

To simulate the rolling operation on a workpiece made of copper. The model will be provided to you. Increase the length of the workpiece by 60mm and decrease its size on both sides by 8mm. Run the simulation for 14 steps and you can give small but random values( similar to the ones mentioned in the video) for the displacement. Ensure that the edge of the workpiece is displaced by 90mm.

Find out the

  1. Equivalent stress for the whole setup
  2. Equivalent Plastic strain for the workpiece
  3. Directional Deformation in the Z axis for the workpiece
  4. Prove that the workpiece has displaced by 90mm

CASE SETUP :

Set the problem as below.

1. Import geometry.

2. Open space claim and edit the model - increase the length by 60 mm anddecrease the widht from both side by 8 mm.

Fig: Before Editing

Fig: After Editing

3. Open mechanical module.

4. Assign copper alloy NL as material for Workpiece.

5. Create 2 contacts (workpiece-wheel 1 & workpiece- wheel 2) as shown below.

6. Create cylindrical joint for 2 wheels as shown below.

7. Mesh the model by giving 2mm size for workpiece.

8.Set the analysis setting as shown below.

9. Give workpiece displacement in y direction as shown below.

10. For both the wheels give a rotation about z-axis .

11. Sove the problem

RESULT & CONCLUSION :

Equivalent stress for the whole setup

Max value is observed to be 2883.7 MPa.

Equivalent Plastic strain for the workpiece

Max strain is observed to be 1.6

Directional Deformation in the Z axis for the workpiece

Width of the workpiece is observed to be increased by 11.8018 mm

Prove that the workpiece has displaced by 90mm

Below image prove the same.
