Week 4 Challenge
Aim: To calculate the earth pressure that is acting on the abutment wall
INTRODUCTION:- This challenge is focusse on how to apply earth pressure on the abutment wall using the stadd pro software. This study will provide the step by step procedure of designing the thickness of the abutment wall.
LIVE LOAD CALCULATION:-
Ka = 0.35 ; Ysat = 19 ; Ko = 0.5
K1 = Ka*Ysub*h
= 0.35*(Ysat-Yw)*h
= 0.35* (19-10)*3
= 9.45 KN/m2
K2 = Ko*Ysat *4+Ko*Ysub*3
= 0.5*19*4+0.5*(19-10)*3
= 51.5 KN/m2
PROCEDURE:-
- Step 1 :- Analytical Modelling
- Firstly node is created. Then after that abutment wall is modelled.
- Defining the section properties of the abutment wall like thickness of the abutment wall. Thickness of abutment wall is 600 mm.
- Creating mesh side of 0.5 m x 0.5 m through out the length of the abutment wall.
- Creating fixed support at the base of the abutment wall.
- LOADING:- Earth pressure is applied on the abutment wall.
STATIC CHECH :- Static check is ok as the difference between the load and reaction is zero.

DEFLECTION :- Maximum deflection is of 1283.733 mm (wall thickness is 600 mm)

REACTION:-
Fx = 73.699 KN
Fy = Fz = Mz = 0
Mz = 1.455 KN-m
Mz = 17.187 KN-m
PLATE STRESSES:-
Mx = 0.265 KN-m/m (maximum) and Mx = -1209.7 KN-m/m (minimum)
My = 12.1036 KN-m/m (maximum) and My = -204.565 KN-m/m (minimum)
Mxy = 68.1498 KN-m/m (maximum) and Mxy = -68.1498 KN-m/m (minimum)
Sqx = 0.144025 N/mm2 (maximum) and Sqx = -1538.03 N/mm2 (minimum)
Sqy = 246.43 N/mm2 (maximum) and Sqy = -246.43 N/mm2 (minimum)
