Week 3 Verification of Weld Joints

Objective: Verification of joints by using three different materials.

Case-1: By using Strainless steel.

Case-2: By using Aluminium alloy for weld spots and ribs where, using strainless steel for plates.

Case-3: By using Bronze for welds and using strainless steel for ribs and plates.

The given load to the plate is 15000N

Solution:

-Firstly, import the geometry to spaceclaim and see if there are any abnormalities in the geometry. Later open the geometry in mechanical module.

-Now, change the names of the components from geometry tree.

-Change the plate component and rib component from bonded to frictional and assigning the frictional coefficient to 0.2

-Now, assign mesh for the geometry. Assign 5mm element size for the plates and default size for the ribs and weld spots.

-Assign fixed loads at the holes which are present in the larger plate and assign force of 15000N on the hole present in small plate.

-Now, give the output paraments for which you want to solve this simulation i.e Deformation, Equivalent stress, Equyivalent elastic strain and Weld stress(Stress induced on the weld spots).

Case-1: Strainless steel

Deformation

Equivalent Elastic Strain

Equivalent Stress

Weld Stress

Case-2: Aluminium alloy for weld spots and ribs Structural steel for Plates

Deformation

Equivalent Elastic Strain

Case-3: Copper alloy for weld spots and Strainless steel for Plates and Ribs

Weld Stress

Comparision Table:

Case-1 Case-2 Case-3

Deformation(mm) 0.036829 0.045382 0.037206

Equivalent Elastic Strain(mm/mm) 0.002059 0.0034154 0.0026802

Equivalent Stress(MPa) 367.53 388.38 372.21

Weld Stress(MPa) 255.07 233.27 214.42

Conclusion:

-As, we can see from the above table Deformation is high in case-2 i.e in aluminium alloy and it is almost equal in case-1 and case-3.

-As well as for Equivalent Elastic strain case-2>case-3>case-1.

-For Equivalent Stress Case-2> Case-3>Case-1.

-For weld stress Case-1>Case-2>Case-3.
