Week 3 Session 7
DC series motor :
High starting torque capability of the DC series motor makes it a suitable option for traction applications.
It is widely used in traction applications.
Advantages:
* This motor is easy speed control.
*It can withstand a sudden increase in load.
Disadvantages:
*DC series motor is high maitenanace due to brushes and commutators.
BLDC motors:
It is similar to DC series motor with permanent magnets.
It does not have the brush and commutator arrangement and the commutation done by electronically.
Advantages:
*Less maintenance because there is no brushes and commutators.
Disadvantages:
*The cost is high compare to DC series motor.
*At low speed there is slightly vibrations occurs in the motor.
PMSM motor:
The motor have traction characteristics like high power density and high efficiency.
This motor is used in automotive applications.
Advantages:
High efficiency and performance is also good.
Disadvantages:
Cost is high and maintenance also high.
Induction motor:
The motor do not a high starting torque like DC series motor under fixed voltage and fixed frequency operation.
This can be altered by V/F methods.
It is more robust and mechanically stronger than other motors.
Advantages:
*It is low maintenance and high efficiency.
*It does not requires starters.
*cost is low.
Disadavntages:
*Starting torque is low.
*poor positioning control.
